Marine fishing gear tracking system
STT Marine service

A marine tracking system designed to monitor the location of longline fishing gear from onboard commercial fishing vessels. The system helps fishing crews locate fishing gear at sea using GPS/GLONASS satellite positioning and encrypted LoRa radio communication.
  • Determines the location of fishing gear using GPS and GLONASS satellite navigation systems
  • Transmits encrypted location data from buoy-mounted trackers to the onboard base station
  • LoRaWAN enables long-range wireless communication between trackers and the vessel's base station
  • Waterproof enclosure a sealed, waterproof housing designed for operation in demanding marine environments

How the system works

Configuration
The device is configured via Bluetooth using a mobile application.
Installation
The tracker is mounted on a buoy deployed at sea, while the base station is installed onboard the fishing vessel.
Data collection
At configurable intervals, the tracker determines its geographical position using GPS/GLONASS satellite navigation.
Data transmission
The tracker transmits encrypted location data to the onboard base station via LoRa wireless communication.

Mobile Application
The application is compatible with devices running Android 9.0 or later. Once installed, the application provides access to the emergency call device, allowing users to configure its operating parameters and manage device settings directly from their smartphones.

Functional Requirements:

  1. The mobile application must support local configuration and adjustment of device operating parameters via Bluetooth.
Marine buoy tracker
The device is housed in a waterproof enclosure and equipped with a GPS/GLONASS receiver and a LoRa transmitter. The tracker is activated by rotating the magnet on its enclosure to the ON position. At configurable intervals, the tracker determines its geographical coordinates and transmits the data in encrypted form to the onboard base station.

Functional requirements:

  1. Power supply (the tracker must be battery-powered, using solder-mounted batteries, and provide an autonomous operating life of at least 150 days).
  2. Data transmission (the device must transmit data at a configurable interval specified in minutes).
  3. Positioning (the tracker must determine its geographical coordinates at a configurable interval specified in minutes).
  4. Communication range (the communication range must be at least 5 km).
Onboard base station
The base station is equipped with a LoRa receiver designed to receive geographical coordinates transmitted by marine buoy trackers. The received data are subsequently forwarded to a computer through a serial interface.

Functional requirements:

  1. Power supply (the base station must be powered by an external power source. Power must be supplied through a USB connector).
  2. Data transmission (the base station must transmit received data at a specified interval through a USB serial interface. The data must be formatted according to the NMEA 0183 standard using the AIS message header AIVDM. This enables data to be forwarded directly to compatible marine navigation software, such as OpenCPN).
Benefits of the marine fishing gear tracking system
Our marine fishing gear tracking system enables fishing crews to monitor the location of fishing nets, longlines and buoys, reducing the time and fuel required to locate fishing equipment at sea.

The solution improves fishing efficiency, enhances crew safety and supports more sustainable and cost-effective operations.

  • Accurate fishing gear location tracking
The system enables fishing crews to monitor the positions of buoy-mounted trackers directly from the vessel using GPS/GLONASS satellite navigation.
    • Key Benefit: Reduces the time required to locate fishing buoys and retrieve fishing gear.
  • Rugged enclosure and extended battery life
The tracker is housed in a sealed, waterproof enclosure designed to withstand demanding marine conditions. It supports a wide operating temperature range from −40°C to +85°C, subject to appropriate battery selection, and provides at least 150 days of autonomous operation.
    • Key Benefit: Reduces maintenance requirements and equipment replacement costs.
  • Secure long-range wireless data transmission
Location data are transmitted from each tracker to the onboard base station via an encrypted LoRa radio link. Encrypted communication helps protect tracking information against unauthorized interception and access.
    • Key Benefit: Improved data confidentiality and security for fishing operations.
  • Increased fishing efficiency
By monitoring fishing gear locations and receiving updated coordinates, crews can retrieve equipment more efficiently and reduce losses caused by currents or gear drifting away from its intended position.
    Key Benefits:
    • Reduced fuel consumption and time spent searching for fishing equipment.
    • Lower operating costs associated with locating and retrieving gear.
    • Improved operational efficiency and potentially higher profitability through reduced equipment losses and more productive fishing operations.
